Today, we find people all over the world practicing capoeira, not only in parks and studios but also universities and professional institutions. It was the main focus of this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival. The On the Move program examined the trips people make to and within the United States, as well as the stories, traditions, and experiences they bring along. Capoeira is a consequence migration of people to new lands. Mestre Jelon Vieira said at the Festival that Capoeira originated in Brazil and was conceived in Africa.
